City Living with Havanese: Tips for a Happy Pup

Updated: Oct 23, 2024

Living in the city with a Havanese can be a wonderful experience for both the pup and the owner. These lovable and lively little dogs thrive in urban settings when given the right care and attention. In this post, we will discuss some valuable tips to ensure a happy and healthy life for your Havanese in the city.

Exercise is key when raising a Havanese in a city environment. These pups moderately-wound balls of cuteness energy. As puppies, slowly acclaimate them to their neighborhood. We found that the transition from the farm where the breeder lived to bustling Brooklyn was a lot for Callie all at once. Over 4-6 weeks of consistent, but short visits outside, she's gotten more used to the noise and smells of the city.

Socialization is crucial for Havanese dogs, regardless of where they live. In a city setting, there are plenty of opportunities to introduce your pup to new sights, sounds, and smells. Once your dog is fully vaccinated, take your Havanese to dog parks, pet-friendly cafes, or obedience classes to help them build confidence and develop good behavior around other animals and people.

Creating a safe and comfortable living space for your Havanese is also essential in a city environment. If you are like us and your small dog is going to share space with your spouse, kids, and fish, plan to have a small space that is just for your pup. This can be a crate, or even just a gated area. Provide your pup with a cozy bed, toys for mental stimulation, and a designated area for meals and relaxation.

So far, we like to keep our Callie groomed to a shorter length, but Havanese can look stunning with longer coats as well. Regardless of if you want the tom-boy look or a Met Gala superglam look, grooming is a must for Havanese dogs, especially those living in the city where they may encounter more dirt and pollution. Brush your pup's coat daily to prevent matting and tangles, and schedule regular baths to keep their fur clean and fresh. Visit a professional groomer as needed for trims and nail care.

Lastly, there are health considerations any city-dog-parent needs to know. Vaccination is particularly important, since city dogs come in contact with animals that may carry dangerous diseases. That's why, according to the American Animal Hospital Association, core vaccines for dogs apply to rabies, canine distemper virus, adenovirus-2, and parvovirus, with or without parainfluenza virus. Many vets recommend leptospiriosis vaccine for city dogs as well.

In conclusion, raising a Havanese in the city can be a fulfilling experience with the right care and attention. By providing exercise, socialization, a safe living space, grooming, and regular veterinary care, you can ensure a happy and healthy life for your furry friend in an urban environment. Enjoy the wonderful journey of city living with your beloved Havanese companion.
